cPanel, Webmail and Backups: Your Hosting Control Panel, Explained

When you buy hosting, you get a control panel — usually cPanel — and most owners open it exactly once, feel overwhelmed, and never return. That is a shame, because five of its hundred icons cover everything a business owner actually needs. This is the plain-language tour we give every new hosting client, refreshed for 2026.
First, how to get in
Your hosting welcome email contains the cPanel link and credentials. Usually it is yourdomain.co.za/cpanel. Save those credentials in a password manager — they are the keys to your entire online presence: website files, databases, email and backups all live behind this login.
The five areas that matter
- 1
Email Accounts — your professional addresses
Create and manage mailboxes, set quotas and reset passwords. The neighbouring Email Deliverability tool keeps your mail out of spam folders.
- 2
File Manager — your website’s files
Your site lives in public_html. You will rarely edit files here, but it is reassuring to know where everything is — and it is the quickest way to upload a verification file or download your own content.
- 3
WordPress / Softaculous — one-click installs
Most modern cPanels include a WordPress manager: install, update, clone and stage your site without touching code.
- 4
Metrics — who is visiting
Bandwidth and visitor statistics show whether your site is growing and when traffic spikes happen.
- 5
Backup — your safety net
The area to check every month: confirm backups are running, and know how to restore one. The day you need a backup is not the day to learn where it is.
Webmail: your inbox anywhere
Every mailbox you create is instantly available at yourdomain.co.za/webmail — no configuration, from any browser on any device. For daily use, connect your phone and Outlook via IMAP so everything syncs, but webmail is your always-there fallback when a laptop dies or a phone is lost.
One login, total control
Whoever holds the cPanel login holds your website and email. Treat it like internet banking: unique strong password, stored in a password manager, shared only with people who genuinely need it.
